A First in Local Television Station History — Free Email for Station Viewers with Imbedded Local Advertisements — Just Like Free TV!
Colorado Springs, Colorado - Thousands of people lined up for a free, advertiser-supported email service, named KKTV FreeMail. A constant stream of people poured through two Best Buy locations to receive free email service diskettes for the nation’s first advertiser-supported email service. By the end of the first day, five thousand diskette packages were distributed to KKTV’s viewers. 60,000 KKTV FreeMail users are expected. KKTV is the pilot, test-market and showcase station for Softronics, Inc. FreeMail is developed and marketed to local broadcasters, nationwide, by Softronics, Inc.
FreeMail lets the local television’s or radio station’s audience send and receive email with anyone in the world without service fees while letting the station offer increased reach and frequency to their advertising customers.
Simplicity is the key with FreeMail. Users click on a Windows icon to open the program and compose their mail. Prepared email is automatically sent when the user signs on, and any incoming mail is downloaded. The modem dials, and a picture of KKTV’s newsroom set appears, along with an advertisement across the bottom of the screen. Ads are set to change every ten seconds. Users can hear a descriptive audio message from the advertiser if they point-and-click on the ad.
“It costs the viewers absolutely nothing,” says F. Scott Pierce, President of Softronics, Inc., “It’s just like commercial television. Advertisers have a new way to deliver their message to viewers and viewers receive a free service. KKTV is actually establishing an interactive New Media relationship with its audience and getting huge results.”
Local advertisers are excited too. Dan Smith, General Sales Manger for KKTV, said, “As a result of our first day with FreeMail, KKTV had more call-ins from advertisers in one day than we can ever remember. It’s great, something new to sell.”
